Why Marketing?

Well, I guess it’s only fair that I explain that I didn’t actually understand marketing until late in the game. My first passion is writing, but writing lead to marketing. I was a blogger for the longest time. I was happy I had a website willing to give me pixel space for my thoughts on hockey, but I was annoyed that no one was finding my work. Cue my manager stepping in and teaching me about SEO and my world opening up to a new level of readership. I’ll admit, my most avid readers were my immediate family, but I saw readership grow beyond them. It was great. It was exhilarating. I wanted more readers so I started learning as much as I could.
Okay, cool, so you’re an egomaniac who loved seeing her name in Google Search Results?
Not quite. I mean it is pretty cool to search for my name and see me dominate the first page of results on Google. But what it meant was I finally found something I could win at, I could beat algorithms. My website and my staff was never going to compete against ESPN or Sports Illustrated, but it did get me noticed. Not in a major way, but I had people listening to my opinions on Twitter. People who had found me through my writing. I had a small portfolio but it had fans. I had readership and enough talent that when I applied to write for Sports Illustrated’s blog as an intern, they actually agreed to let me write! That’s when I really saw the power of SEO and marketing with a strategy take off.
What am I looking for?
Everything, to be frank. Even if you’re not completely sure I’m a fit, you need someone with creativity and annoying level of attention to detail; the ability to create and analyze; to look at the big picture and course correct when necessary. My passion is looking at the task and figuring out the best way to maximize the content to get all the eyeballs, clicks, and impressions necessary. Nothing brings me greater joy than looking at a project at six different angles and trying to improve on it. Finding trends, hidden patterns, new audiences, and that secret to success is thrilling to me.
